In this small, but useful tutorial I’m going to share with you about how to make an interesting summer text effect by using some layer styles. First of all, we need to find the texture where we will demonstrate out text effect. Download my grass texture form here or feel free to use your own textures. Ok, now I would like to add some small detail on the background, it should be something contrast and bright. I think the picture of butterfly will be fine. Download the picture of butterfly form here . Open up it and copy it to our main canvas. Then press Ctrl+T to reduce picture of butterfly. Then apply the Sharpen Tool to sharpen current layer a little bit. Ok, then apply Drop Shadow and Outer Glow layer styles to this layer. Now we can start with text effect. Get out the Horizontal Type Tool and write out your text, for example ‘Grass’ in whatever color you want. In the above image I’ve used a font called Arial Black. Now, set up fill opacity to 0% for this text layer and apply the following layer styles to the text layer: Drop Shadow , Inner Glow , Bevel and Emboss , Satin , Color Overlay and Stroke Now your image should now look like the image shown below: Well, we’re pretty much finished for this tutorial, thanks for taking the time to read it!

Glenn Robinson is a California native and an extremely unique designer. He has an impeccable, incomparable style of perfectly blending many different elements. But on top of that, unlike most designers, Glenn only does this as a hobby, and his work is arguably better than some full-time designers. In this interview Glenn shares some of his wisdom with us about proper blending, and some of his work among other things. So lets get into another great interview! 1. Welcome to Psdtuts+, please introduce yourself. Could you tell us where you’re from and how you got started in the field? Thanks for the invitation to be interviewed, first of all! My name is Glenn Robinson. I’m a native and current resident of Sacramento, California USA. I got started with digital art back in June of 2006. One evening while at home I was searching for some Photoshop tutorials online and I happened to stumble upon a “GFX” community website called ParallelFX. They had a tutorial section on their forum showing people how to make forum signatures and tags. After hanging around that community for a while I learned that there was actually a worldwide culture of digital artists producing a wide range and variety of artwork, and this very much intrigued me. I went from making small forum signatures to working on larger canvases sometime in 2007. Since my childhood, art has always played an important role in my life. So now, even as an adult, it was no strange occurrence to find myself being attracted to a new, powerfully expressive medium such as digital art. Tree of Life and Knowledge 2. There are so many different elements that you incorporate in your art, from 3D to photo manipulation. How do you blend all these styles in a harmonious way? Three things are most important in meshing various elements together: (1) composition, (2) lighting/shading, and (3) blending. The placement of the various elements is going to make or break a piece: this is where composition comes in. Even though your objects are totally unrelated or created using different media, you can place them with, on top, or around other things in a way that looks good. The trick is trying to figure that part out. Experimenting is key, but as a general rule you want your composition to point to some main focal object. Lighting and shading help all of your pieces make sense with each other. Making sure all of your objects have the same direction of lighting and corresponding drop shadows brings a sense of realism to your piece that is crucial. Blending is often times such a nebulous term thrown around by digital artists. What I personally mean by blending is taking the time to balance out the brightness and contrast, levels, and tones on each individual object layer to make sure it all looks like it belongs on the same canvas. I usually take my blending cues from my main focal object, striving to make every other element blend with it. Sometimes blending means texturing, smudging, or soft brush erasing certain parts (or all) of the other elements to make them fit, too
How to Make a Melting Camera Scene

In this tutorial, we’ll use the Layer Mask Tool and Liquify filter to “melt” the camera. I recommend you work with a tablet for this one (it makes your work easier), but if you don’t have one it is also possible to go through this tutorial. Let’s start! Final Image Preview Take a look at the image we’ll be creating. Want access to the full PSD files and downloadable copies of every tutorial, including this one? Join Psd Plus for just $9/month. You can view the final image preview below. Program: Adobe Photoshop CS4 Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated Completion Time: 2 – 2.5h Step 1 Open the camera file by bennorz , double-click on the layer to unlock it and create a new one beneath. Fill the new layer with a red (#ff0000) color. Now you have a red background beneath the camera layer and it makes it easy to see borders of the object when masking. It is not necessary to use red, but it is better to use a color which is not in the object. Apply a layer mask to the camera layer. Be sure to have it selected when masking. Step 2 Masking is the non-destructive way of removing parts of the image especially the background. That’s because erasing is done on the mask not on the image so you can create a mask and then delete it and the image stays untouched. Other great things of masks are that you can use a variety of tools to create it such as the Pen Tool or brush. This time we will use the brush technique. Select the Brush Tool and set its Hardness to 93% – a mostly hard brush creates better borders on objects. Now we are ready to start masking. Step 3 You can start whenever you want in the image, just bear in mind that if you use a “Black color” the brush will start erasing the image and if you use a “White color” or eraser (E) the image will start appearing back. So mask everything except the camera – just paint around the camera, zoom in and out and resize the brush to get the adequate effect. Pay more attention to corners – the most critical ones are shown in white circles below.
Creating a Set of Digital Painting Icons Part 4 – Digital Tablet Icon

For this forth installment of the “Creating a Set of Digital Painting Icons” series we will create a pen tablet from scratch, specifically the Wacom 12″ Cintiq tablet. This model combines touch and pressure sensitivity, which allows users to draw directly on the screen. These capabilities make it a favorite for illustrators. Let’s get to work. Psd Plus Membership Want access to the full PSD files and downloadable copies of every tutorial, including this one? Join Psd Plus for just $9/month. You can view the final image preview below. Tutorial and Series Details Below are the five icons we are creating in this series. Take a look at the finished icon for this tutorial. We’ll draw the tablet and the stylus complete with shiny screen, side buttons and blue LED status lights. Program : Adobe Photoshop CS4 Difficulty: Intermediate Estimated Completion Time: 1.5 hours Step 1 Fire up Photoshop and create a new RGB blank document, choosing a 512px x 512px square canvas. Choose a dark gray foreground color then select the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) from the toolbar. In the option bar at the top of the screen enter 30px for the corner radius (1a) then Alt-click and drag from the center of the canvas to create the main body of the tablet (1b). Alt-clicking centers shapes, selections and transformations around the mouse. It’s a pretty useful keyboard shortcut so note it down. When you’re satisfied with the shape right-click on the layer and choose Rasterize Layer. Name it “base.” Step 2 Let’s establish now that the light comes from the top. This requires that we make all upward-facing surfaces lighter and all downward-facing surfaces darker. We will stick to this rule throughout the tutorial. The tablet’s main body looks flat. Let’s add some lighting by choosing a light gray as foreground color and keeping the previous dark gray as background color (2a). Hit G to select the Gradient Tool. Before we paint the gradient, though, let’s lock the “base” layer’s transparency by clicking the transparent square at the top of the Layers palette (2b). Now we can safely paint all over the tablet because we will be limited to the existing pixels. Paint the gradient with a vertical stroke, light to dark (2c). Step 3 The surface of the tablet is not so smooth. There’s a very fine grain. To create that go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and choose 1%, Uniform and Monochromatic (3a). See the result (3b). We also need to give the tablet some thickness so double-click on the “base” layer to open the Layer Style window and click on Bevel and Emboss. Refer to image 3c for the settings. Now the tablet has thickness and a gentle curve around the edges (3d). Step 4 Let’s draw the glass surface. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) again but this time set Radius to 10px (4a). Draw a smaller rectangle at the top center and name it “glass” (4b). Rasterize it, lock its transparency and fill it with a vertical gradient from a medium to a very dark gray (4c)

Winter is here and the days are getting colder and colder. As designers, whether on purpose or not, we all tend to get inspired by what’s going on outside the window. Ice and snow particularly play a big role when inspiring creatives all over the world, and ultimately inspire us to bring winter themed ideas to life. We have collected some great print and advertisement design work. With it we have compiled this beautiful showcase. Do you get inspired by the wintery weather? Let us know! Winter-Themed Designs The following selection of artwork uses some incredible and obvious techniques to present a wintery theme. Each and every piece of artwork in one way or another use snow in their work, apart from one (the Evian Water Advertisement piece). Another thing a lot of the designers have incorporated in their designs is subtle grunge and noise, such as: ‘Ski Poster’, ‘Shh…Festival 08 Poster’ and ‘Winter Frost New Years Eve Ball Poster’. The Nokia 7610 Poster, for example, combines a cold, wintery landscape with a hot, lava themed landscape. Other artwork in this section does include snow, just not in such an obvious way; it is either very discrete or just simply isn’t noticed as well because of other focal points such as the horizon in the ‘Looming on the Horizon Poster’.
